Happy Crochet Month!

Image
March is National Crochet Month! My question to you is how will you "Celebrate"?  Will you try a new, more advanced technique and master it?  Will you buy some luscious yarn reserved for a special pattern?  Will you make and donate some hats or lapghans for veterans or the homeless?  Share your thoughts below!  grin emoticon Happy Crochet Month!

Beaded Crochet Bracelet with Pattern

Image
Keeping in step with the project theme of last week, I've made another beaded bracelet. This time however, it involves crochet. Gather your supplies and make a few of these! Materials : Assorted Beads (make sure the hole is big enough for your choice of thread) size E/4 - 3.5MM hook Crochet thread, yarn or Friendship thread scissors yarn needle bracelet closure Stitches used : (American Terms) Chain (ch) Single Crochet (sc) Slip Stitch (sl st) Step One : String your beads onto your yarn. Using as few or as many as you like. I opt to put extra on my thread because if there are extra when you're finished it's no big deal. Step Two : Chain a number that will loosely go across your wrist + 1. The "+1" is our turning chain and it's needed to make sure we don't use up the length as we work on the bracelet. Step Three : SC in second ch from hook and in each stitch across. Ch 1 and turn. Begin Beading Step Four : SC in fi...

Thanksgivukkah - A Crossover of Holidays

Image
This year people will celebrate Thanksgiving and the first full day of Hanukkah, tomorrow, November 28, 2013. This crossover happens once in every few decades, with the next crossover occurring in 2070 and again in 2165. Rabbi Larry Karol with Temple Beth-El in Las Cruces, NM, said that a similar message can be found in both holidays. "For Thanksgiving, part of what we're giving thanks for is freedom," Karol said. "Not only freedom in general but freedom to worship the way we wish." In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth, Mass. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identifi...

I Love Yarn Day! Whoo-Hoo!

Image
Did you know that there was a day to celebrate our love of YARN? I didn't know until I ran across a post a couple years ago from CraftYarnCouncil . If I remember correctly, I was looking for some standard sizes for socks and ran across their site in my research. Their site also has free patterns as well as party ideas and tips for teaching others how to Knit and Crochet. By the way, I never got those socks made, it was a last ditch effort in trying to love knitting. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate knitting, I just prefer crochet (and I'm better at it than knitting =D).  Tomorrow, Friday, October 11, 2013, is I LOVE YARN DAY . The following information is from their site at www.craftyarncouncil.com/I-Love-Yarn . "Whether you knit, crochet, craft or just adore fiber, October 11th, 2013 is the day to affirm your passion for yarn. Show it off, tag with it, carry it, gather with friends. Declare your LOVE! Get involved. Create an I Love Yarn Day badge ...

Arrr, Mates! Tis Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Image
Talk Like a Pirate Day has been a day of celebration for those that love pirates or just a random day to do something different. Conceived by a bunch of friends and made a national sensation by Dave Barry, National Talk Like a Pirate Day has had people by the eye-patch for about 10 years. Maybe longer in some areas. In honor of this frivolous and fun "holiday", here are some links to patterns from other crafters that can help you celebrate your inner swashbuckler. Here are some Granny Squares to help get you in the mood: Repeat Crafter Me How about an outfit for that office party on September 19th? Or even Halloween? Redheart Yarns If you aren't into a complete outfit, try the essential pirate accessory! DIY Geekery And last but not least, the hard core swashbuckler's favorite friend, Polly! (Polly is a pattern available for purchase on Etsy. But his name isn't Polly, that's just what I would have called him.) Amigurumi Parrot So the...
