Crochet in Church?

Image
Well, yes, I do crochet in church. On Sunday mornings, during the sermon and during Sunday school, in my Wednesday night small group; I crochet everywhere I go. It's who I am. I take it with me to the doctor's office, on road trips, to school functions with my kids. Family reunions at the park, do I have my crochet? Yes. Yes, I do. This is Marie sporting the hat I made today, yes, in church. That's hat Number 25! I think crocheting in church is okay.  I can still answer questions during group discussion and   I'm not pattern reading, I can listen without messing up or having to count stitches, I don't mind to set it down while we stand and sing. Children love coming up to me after church and seeing how far I've gotten on the hat. Most are amazed, and so are their parents, that I can get one completed by the time the sermon is over. I understand some people might have an issue with my desire to crochet in church. I understand where you're coming f...

Cluster Stitch Bag

Image
Using the pattern from +bobwilson123 I made this bag and it took just a couple of hours (with interruptions from the kids mind you) but since I'm not used to sewing (at all) it took 3 tries and 8 hours to get the lining in correctly! LoL I am very pleased with it and will probably make a couple more as gifts for Christmas and birthdays. This one ? Well, I think this one is mine. Just the right size for my wallet and cell phone and light weight enough that it won't feel like it's pulling my shoulder out of it's socket! I absolutely love my hobby, even when it does involve hand stitching a lining into a bag!

Hookers Need Love Too (for their hooks!)

Hookers? Well that's a term . . . umm . . . let me quote an expert here: " . . . the first printed crochet pattern appeared in a Dutch magazine early in the nineteenth century . . . As the appalling conditions of lace makers became known to the American women, they started to get interested in creating the work themselves rather than supporting the abusive practices of the lace making industry. In a book published at the time, a lace manufacturer admitted that he expected his workers to turn a few tricks on the side to make up for his not paying them a living wage. As Donna Kooler suggests in The Encyclopedia of Crochet , this may even explain how the word "hooker" came to have such wayward connotations. " ~ Debbie Stoller   Stitch 'n Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker Now since crochet has only been around for a little over 200 years ( * ) and no one really knows where it started we can pretty much only rely on what's been written. Knitting has bee...
